A care app patients actually open twice a week
An iOS and Android app for appointments, results and care plans, launched on the planned date.
The challenge
Lumen Health runs a network of community clinics. Patients booked by phone, received results by letter and kept care plans on paper. The team wanted one app for all three, usable by patients who are not confident with technology.
The app had to meet health data requirements, work on older phones and launch in time for the clinic’s winter vaccination programme.
What we did
One team from scope to launch. The stack behind it:
Designed with patients
We tested prototypes with twenty-four patients across three clinics, including several over seventy. Large type, plain language and a three-tab structure came straight out of those sessions.
One codebase, native feel
A React Native app shares nearly all of its code across iOS and Android, with native modules for biometrics, reminders and calendar integration.
Privacy by default
Results are fetched on demand and never cached unencrypted on the device. Sessions are short, sign-in uses Face ID or a passcode, and every access is logged.
Friday demos
Clinic staff saw a working build every Friday for sixteen weeks, and their feedback set the next sprint.
The outcome
The app launched on the planned date on both stores. Within three months the majority of appointments were booked in the app, and the phone line was freed up for patients who need to talk to someone.
“They worked like part of our team. Friday demos meant nothing was a surprise, and the app launched on the date we planned.”
